If you are girl and reading this blog, better to thanks him
first. Due to him only whole race of Indian women's are able to get education,
before him whatever religion and caste you are belongs you don’t have right
to learn.
In 1848, an incident took place in his life that later
sparked off the revolution in the Indian society. Jyotirao was invited to
attend a wedding of one of his Brahmin friends. Knowing that he belonged to inferior
caste, the relatives of the bridegroom insulted and abused him. Jyotirao left
the procession and made up his mind to defy the prevailing caste-system and
social restrictions. He then started his campaign of serving the people of
lower caste who were deprived of all their rights as human beings.
After reading Thomas Paine's famous book 'The Rights of Man' on French Revolution Jyotirao was greatly influenced by his ideas. He believed that enlightenment of the women and lower caste people was the only solution to combat the social evils. Therefore, in 1848, he along with his wife Savitre bahi (what Saraswati never did she did) started a first school for the girls.
In 1851, Jyotiba established a girls' school and asked his wife to teach the girls in the school. Jyotirao, later, opened two more schools for the girls and an indigenous school for the lower castes.
The conventional Brahmins of the society were enraged at the activities of Jyotirao. They blamed him for violating the norms and regulations of the society.. But Jyotirao was firm and decided to continue the movement. Interestingly, Jyotirao had some Brahmin friends who extended their support to make the movement successful. In first school 4 girls are Brahmins out of nine students.
Phule had a favorable opinion about the British Rule in
India at least from the point of view of introducing modern philosophy of
justice and equality in Indian society and taking India into the future. His
famous quote about the first freedom struggle of 1857, He said "Thank god,
the British Govt won the war. This is a mutiny by Brahmin priests and bhikkus"
and I agree with this.
His saying,
विद्येविना मती गेली | मतीविना नीति गेली | नीतीविना गती गेली | गतीविना वित्त गेले | वित्ताविना शुद्र खचले | इतके अनर्थ एका अविद्येने केले!
